Plain Talk About

The Gospel of Jesus Christ

What is the gospel?

The gospel means “good news.”  The gospel of Jesus is the good news about Jesus Christ.

Is the term used exclusively of Christ?

The term is used of God and in other ways:

The gospel of God-  Romans 1: 1; 2 Corinthians 11: 7

The gospel of the kingdom-  Matthew 4: 23

The gospel of grace-  Acts 20: 24

The gospel of peace-  Romans 10: 15; Ephesians 6: 15

The gospel of salvation-  Ephesians 1: 13

What specifically is the gospel of Jesus Christ?

The gospel is the news that God so loved the world that He gave His own Son to taste death for everyone.  Specifically the death, burial and resurrection and resurrection of Jesus are identified as the gospel.  John 3: 16; 1 Corinthians 15: 1- 4; Hebrews 2: 9

What is the relationship of the gospel to the word of God?

The gospel is the word of God.  This relationship is indicated in several verses.  Acts 8: 25; 15: 7; Ephesians 1: 13; Colossians 1: 5; 1 Peter 1: 25; Hebrews 4: 2

What is the word of God?

The word of God is the “seed.”  The “seed” is that from which anything springs.  When speaking of the regeneration, the “seed” is that which produces the new life.  God begets us through the seed, the word of God.  Luke 8: 11; 1 Peter 1: 23; James 1: 18; 1 John 5: 1

The seed is the word

The word is the gospel

Therefore the gospel is also the seed.

The Scriptures prove this because Paul, the teacher of the Corinthians, was said to have begotten them through the gospel.  1 Corinthians 4: 15

Paul also begat Philemon through the word or the gospel while he was in prison.  Philemon 10

What is the power of God unto salvation?

You guessed it; it is the gospel?

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone that believes, to the Jew first and also the Greek.  For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.  Romans 1: 16, 17

How does God draw mankind or attract man to Him?

God draws man through the gospel.  The gospel is essentially a love story.  It is the story of a Father who sacrificed His beloved Son to save others.  And it is the story of one person being willing to die for another.  Jesus said there is no greater love than one person giving his life for another.  This is exactly what Jesus did.  He died so we might live.  The love of God and Jesus appeals to us and induces us to come to Him.  We love because He first loved us.   John 15: 13; 6: 44; 12: 32; 2 Corinthians 5: 14; 1 John 4: 19

The gospel must be believed?

The gospel is effective in only those that believe it.  The preaching of the cross is foolishness to those that perish but it is the power of God to those that believe and are being saved.  The necessity of belief of the gospel comes as no surprise because we know that we must believe that God exists and that Jesus is the Son of God, the Messiah.  1 Corinthians 1: 11- 24; Hebrews 11: 6; John 8: 24

When we come to faith in the gospel we come to believe that Jesus died for our sins, was buried and rose again after the third day.  Those that do are said to have been begotten through the gospel by either God or their teacher.  The gospel or the word of God is the seed, which God implants into our hearts when we believe.  These are given the right to become children of God.  At this point they are only begotten; they will not be born again until they obey the gospel.  Luke 8: 11; 1 Peter 1: 23; John 1: 12, 13

The gospel must be obeyed?

God will deal out eternal destruction to those that do not know God and do not obey the gospel. This is a surprise to many; many hold to a “faith only” position.  Friends, “faith only” simply is not true. This verse alone shows us that obedience is a necessity in God’s plan of salvation.   But please don’t make the assumption that this obedience is a work performed to be righteous before God.  If this is your persuasion I hope you will take the time to read the “Faith” and “Faith Only” articles.  This obedience is the obedience of faith.   2 Thessalonians 1: 8, 9; Matthew 7: 21; Hebrews 5: 8, 9

How can we obey the gospel?

This is a good question.  The gospel is essentially three facts, the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  How can we obey a fact?  The Apostle Paul gives us the solution.  There is one command that incorporates these three facts in its obedience.   Mark 16: 16

Or do you not that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?  Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.  For if we have become united with Him, in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, that our body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin.  Romans 6: 3-7

The conclusion is obvious; when we are baptized we obey the gospel.

Why would God command those that believe to be baptized?

It is not to place God in debt to us; it is not a work of righteousness, which we perform.  We do not earn or merit salvation because we have been baptized.  No, none of these!  Baptism is God’s gift to those that believe.  It is for our benefit.  Baptism gives closure to faith.  Our faith is perfected, matured or completed when in faith we obey His command.  No more mourning bench, pleading and praying for God to give a sign that the Holy Spirit had been received.  Baptism is God’s sign to us that He has kept His promises.

Baptism symbolizes three things to the believer.  First, it is a cleansing; second, it symbolizes being united with Christ and thirdly, coming forth from baptism (the immersion in water) and the reception of the Spirit, which God pours out at that time, symbolizes the new birth.

And now why do you delay?  Arise, and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name.  Acts 22: 16

For if we have become united with Him (through baptism) in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also in the likeness of His resurrection.  Romans 6: 5

For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.  For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourself with Christ.  Galatians 3: 26, 27

Conclusion:

The gospel, the truth that Jesus died for our sins, was buried and arose the third day, is the power by which God saves us.

This truth is apprehended by faith, the principle that brings life.

When we believe in the gospel, we are begotten by God and given the right to become a child of God.

When we obey the gospel, we are born again, cleansed of sin and united with Christ and clothed with the righteousness of Christ.  This is the good news.

God bless.
