Was Jesus a historical character?

Yes Jesus lived in a known country at a particular time in history. The main documents that tell us of Him, the New Testament, are historical documents and deserve to be treated as such. They are better attested to than most ancient documents; in fact the evidence for these documents is remarkable. In addition Jesus is mentioned by Tacitus, a Roman historian, and Josephus, a Jewish Historian.

Who was Jesus of Nazareth?

I like the comment of C. S. Lewis who said that He is either a liar, a lunatic or the Son of God. If you do not accept Jesus’ claim to be the Son of God then you must conclude He is either a liar or lunatic. There are no other options. He does not allow us to be neutral. Of course the problem with considering Him to be a liar is that He brought the greatest ethical teaching known to man. On the other hand if He was crazy, His contemporaries and enemies would have been more than happy to point it out. He didn’t so impress people. I believe He was, as He said, the Son of God.
