Plain Talk About

The New Birth

What is the new birth?

The new birth is a spiritual birth in which one becomes a child of God.  It is a transition time when one leaves the kingdom of darkness and enters the glorious kingdom of light.  It is the time when one passes from spiritual death into spiritual life in Christ.  (John 3: 3, 5, 8; 5: 24; Colossians 1: 13)

What is the nature of the new birth?

We repeat, the new birth is a spiritual birth; it does not refer to the natural birth process although Jesus likens it to the natural process to help us understand.  The new birth is one birth, a birth from water and the Spirit.  (John 3: 3, 5)

Who has the right to be born again?

Only those who have been begotten by God, by coming to faith in Jesus Christ, have the right to be born again, to become a child of God.  (John 1: 12, 13)

In the natural realm, the child is begotten by the father and conceived by the mother some nine months before the actual birth.  The begettal is distinct from the actual birth, which occurs later.  The natural realm serves as an analogy for the spiritual realm.  We can better understand the spiritual realm from consideration of the natural.  There must be a spiritual begettal

Does man have a part in becoming a child of God?

In the religious world we have well meaning, but misguided folks, that tell us man has no part in becoming a child of God.  The Scriptures on the other hand tell us that those that believe are given the right to become a child of God.  I think I will stay with the Scriptures.  These folks are illustrative of those who carry an analogy to far.  (John 1: 12, 13)

To what does “water” and “Spirit” refer?

Plain Talk proposes a novel interpretation; “water” means “water” and “Spirit” means “Spirit.”  They do not refer to the word, amniotic fluid, and the begettal or to natural birth as some have proposed.

When is there a concurrence of water and Spirit in the Scriptures?

Peter said, “Repent, and let each of you be baptized (water) in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Spirit).

When is one born of water and the Spirit?

In the natural realm a child is born when it comes forth from the womb into a new life.  Similarly one is spiritually born again when you come forth from water and the Spirit.  When you are baptized you are immersed in water, as you come forth from the water you are born of water.  When you are baptized God pours out His Spirit upon us richly and abundantly.  So much so that we are figuratively immersed or baptized or immersed in the Spirit.  As you come forth from this experience you are also born of the Spirit.  (Romans 6: 4, 5)

What is the purpose of baptism in water?

What is the purpose of being born of the Spirit?

When does the new life begin?

The new life is in Christ.  He that has the Son has the life.  When one enters into that relationship termed “in Christ” he is made alive in Christ.  When we are baptized into Christ, we receive the Spirit of God; the Spirit gives life. 1 John 5: 11-13; Romans 6: 4; 8: 2, 10, 11; Titus 3: 5, 6; 2 Corinthians 3: 6; John 6: 63; Ezekiel 37: 1-14
